We Carry Time

Derrick Ofosu Boateng

Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemühle Fine Art Paper

Proverb
Nnipa a wɔsoa dɔnhwerew na wosi daakye.
The future is built by those who carry the hour.

Two brothers walk forward while holding a giant red clock between them. Their bodies lean under its weight, revealing a truth Hueism often reminds us of: progress is not simply measured by time, it is produced by effort.

The clock becomes more than an object; it is responsibility itself. Every hour represents work, patience, and discipline. Hueism teaches that time rewards those who move with it rather than those who wait for it.

The red helmets introduce preparation and labor. They signify builders, those who shape the future rather than simply witnessing it. In Hueism philosophy, the future is constructed by hands willing to carry the burden of time.

Yellow behind them symbolizes opportunity and vision. It is the promise of tomorrow. Yet Hueism reminds us that tomorrow does not arrive freely, it is lifted forward by people who commit their strength today.

The two figures move together, not alone. Hueism emphasizes that endurance multiplies when responsibility is shared. Time becomes lighter when carried collectively.

Hueism teaches that success is rarely about speed. It is about those who continue walking while holding the weight of the clock.

"From a mainstream, predominantly Western viewpoint, Africa is often painted in a negative light. My aim is to correct this misperception, using my art to accurately depict what African culture truly embodies and represents. To me, that includes our unyielding optimism, pride, unity, sense of family, resilience, beauty, success and rich traditions."

Derrick Ofosu Boateng (Accra, 1998) is an autodidact fine art photographer inspired by the wisdom of African proverbs and the richness of the continent, creating vibrant images that veer between visual poetry and conceptual art. Boateng employs his unique chromatic language, stark silhouettes, and ancient storytelling to challenge negative and limited perceptions of Africa. Since the onset of his artistic path, his photography and post-production have been entirely iPhone-based. Boateng’s work brims with energy, color and most of all joy. Derrick titled his debut monograph Hueism to advocate for a larger African Art movement. Distinguished clients and subjects include Naomi Campbell, Louis Vuitton, and Common.
