The Sound Of The Journey

Derrick Ofosu Boateng

Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemühle Fine Art Paper

Proverb
“Sɛ kwan no ware a, ma akwantu no nto dwom.”
When the road is long, let the journey sing.

Movement is not always silent. Sometimes the journey must sing.

Three brothers ride together inside a yellow tuk-tuk, each lifting a trumpet to the air. The repetition of the same figure reveals a Hueist idea: one voice becomes many when purpose is shared. Sound multiplies when conviction is aligned.

The vehicle symbolizes direction and everyday motion. It is not a luxury carriage but a working machine of movement. Hueism places music inside labor, reminding us that culture does not live in stillness; it travels with people.

Trumpets represent announcement. Breath becomes message. In Hueism, instruments are not decorations but carriers of voice, turning personal expression into communal rhythm.

The red sky amplifies urgency and life-force. Yellow metal suggests movement and survival. Blue ground steadies the scene, giving balance to energy and ambition.

Hueism teaches that culture moves forward like a vehicle: powered by effort, guided by rhythm, and sustained by those willing to keep playing the song of the road.

"From a mainstream, predominantly Western viewpoint, Africa is often painted in a negative light. My aim is to correct this misperception, using my art to accurately depict what African culture truly embodies and represents. To me, that includes our unyielding optimism, pride, unity, sense of family, resilience, beauty, success and rich traditions."

Derrick Ofosu Boateng (Accra, 1998) is an autodidact fine art photographer inspired by the wisdom of African proverbs and the richness of the continent, creating vibrant images that veer between visual poetry and conceptual art. Boateng employs his unique chromatic language, stark silhouettes, and ancient storytelling to challenge negative and limited perceptions of Africa. Since the onset of his artistic path, his photography and post-production have been entirely iPhone-based. Boateng’s work brims with energy, color and most of all joy. Derrick titled his debut monograph Hueism to advocate for a larger African Art movement. Distinguished clients and subjects include Naomi Campbell, Louis Vuitton, and Common.
