Desert Geometry

Hayley Eichenbaum

Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemühle Fine Art Paper

For the last ten years, Eichenbaum has documented her cross-country travels, resulting in The Mother Road series. Her photographic work expands on notions of the veneer; the focus on exterior architecture and curated landscape. Specifically, the remnants of the American Southwest, which reveal that a well-maintained façade is crucial to societal survival.

"For me a lot of the Southwest is about the loving care that people have put in these dilapidated highways. Before commercial flights were a thing, those roads were the heart of everything. They connected all corners of America. There are so many businesses that thrived back in the day. And they still put so much care and love into these spaces. I just remembered thinking: ‘They preserve the romance of route 66’."

Hayley Eichenbaum captures the “punchy absurdity” of Route 66 roadside architecture.
Photographer Hayley Eichenbaum has created a series of images documenting the roadside architecture of America’s Route 66 that takes its cues from the often uncanny appearance of film stills.Eichenbaum’s photographs are part of an ongoing series called The Mother Road, which nods to the moniker for Route 66 – a renowned highway that runs from Chicago to Santa Monica.
