Hidden Embrace v2

Derrick Ofosu Boateng

Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemühle Fine Art Paper

Derrick Ofosu Boateng (Accra, 1998) is an autodidact fine art photographer inspired by the wisdom of African proverbs and the richness of the continent, creating vibrant images that veer between visual poetry and conceptual art. Boateng employs his unique chromatic language, stark silhouettes, and ancient storytelling to challenge negative and limited perceptions of Africa. Since the onset of his artistic path, his photography and post-production have been entirely iPhone-based. Boateng’s work brims with energy, color and most of all joy. Derrick titled his debut monograph Hueism to advocate for a larger African Art movement. Distinguished clients and subjects include Naomi Campbell, Louis Vuitton, and Common.

"From a mainstream, predominantly Western viewpoint, Africa is often painted in a negative light. My aim is to correct this misperception, using my art to accurately depict what African culture truly embodies and represents. To me, that includes our unyielding optimism, pride, unity, sense of family, resilience, beauty, success and rich traditions."

Music Makes the Pain Fade, a solo exhibition by Derrick Ofosu Boateng, celebrates the transformative power of music. For Boateng, music is more than sound—it is a never-ending source of creativity, a force of healing and a vessel of joy. In line with his artistic practice, which is inspired by ancient Ghanaian proverbs, music also forms a bridge between past and present, connecting the contemporary with the traditional, the spiritual with the earthly, and the individual with the community.

The exhibition shares its title with Music Makes the Pain Fade, the artwork that became the cover for Common’s A Beautiful Revolution in 2019. This piece catapulted Boateng onto the global stage, kickstarting his career in fine art photography.

Originally created for the 205 African Grammy Awards ceremony at LACMA, this collection will now debut at Boateng’s Homecoming Gallery after the event was canceled due to the LA fires.
