Jonathan Bertin

Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemühle Fine Art Paper

Born in 1996 in Normandy, Jonathan Bertin has been living and working in Paris since 2023. A color photographer who works with both digital and film, he has emerged as an artist of the ultra-ordinary.

After beginning his photographic journey by exploring his region and studying in the field of imagery, a sense of fatigue set in, leading him to embark on a long introspective process and a two-year journey around the world.

Upon returning to the Normandy countryside, his vision was profoundly impacted by his explorations, shaping a photographic approach that he refined in this familiar territory—the everyday would then become the playground for his practice.

    BIO
Originally from the Normandy countryside, Jonathan is a photographer of the ordinary. After exploring his home region, a sense of weariness set in, leading him to embark on a long introspective journey, traveling to the four corners of the globe for two years.

Upon his return to Normandy in 2020, he was profoundly influenced by the diversity, colors, light, and spaces encountered during his travels. These experiences have since become a rich and fertile ground for his photographic approach, which he now seeks to transpose into the everyday.

This shift gave him a new outlook: displacement is no longer found elsewhere, but rather in how we observe our surroundings. This thought radically transformed his photography. The everyday became his playground, where he embraces the subtleties of the ordinary, the colors, and the movement. His approach offers a sensitive portrayal of the environments he engages with, through an original perspective.

The culmination of this research took shape in 2022 with his first book, New York – Quête I, self-published in 2000 copies, and exhibited Off at Paris Photo at Galerie MR80, Rue de Turenne.

At the end of 2022, he moved to Paris and simultaneously embarked on a project centered around his recently departed Norman everyday life. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Impressionist movement, he approached photography with a renewed sense of temporality, drawing inspiration from movement and color. This project resulted in his second book, Impressionism, published by Four Eyes Editions in 2500 copies. His work was recognized and exhibited during the summer of 2024 as part of the Normandie Impressionniste festival.
