‘Yūgen’ by Pia Riverola is a collection of photographs and painted photographs by Pia Riverola from Japan that were taken between 2019 and 2024.  The title refers to the ancient concept embedded in Japanese culture that resonates with the allure and profundity beyond the apparent.  An aesthetic ideal rooted in Buddhist teachings that invites to uncover a more subtle, genuine beauty through deep connection. A beauty that is only partially perceived –  fully felt, but barely glimpsed by the viewer.

This idea of Yūgen perfectly describes Pia Riverola’s experiences in Japan where she found herself amidst a place of wonder, a culture of intrigue and a population most unique. Through her ongoing body of work, Riverola dives deep into the mysterious, complex, at times contradictory and multi-layered narratives that can be found in the rushing streets of Tokyo, the vibrant colours of Kyoto traditional dress and the glimmering reflections in the rivers of Osaka. Yūgen captures the fleeting, in-between moments of it all.

‘Learning to see is my ever inspiring task as a photographer. No words can do justice to the beauty that is in the meticulous ways of the Japanese harmonizing ancient traditions and modern life.’

BIO

Pia Riverola’s poetic photography is a tribute to the diversity of cultures and their richness. Candid portraits, natural landscapes, street scenes, or still life, Riverola’s colorful imagery carries a deep empathy for her subjects and surroundings. Capturing moments with a dream-like quality, while reflecting her emotions through her photography evoking nostalgia in her audiences. Pia lives between Mexico City, LA, and Barcelona and shoots for clients like Calvin Klein, Loewe, NYT,  Wall Street Journal, and many others.

Her body of work ‘Flechazo’ -tributing Mexico, it’s culture and people,- was exhibited and published in Riverola’s debut monograph by Homecoming Gallery. The book was selected as part of the best Dutch book designs of 2022 – on view at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Her just released second book Días is published by Loose Joints.

Yūgen is Pia’s latest ongoing project, a visual love-letter to her second cultural love, Japan.

“My work could not exist without nature. It’s all about cherishing and paying homage to the land. For me, preservation is so important. I hope that when people see the book they understand how all these marvellous places are not going to exist if we keep going down the path we are on.”
