Sophie Crichton

Sophie Crichton is a contemporary visual artist based in Barcelona. Best known for her large-scale mixed media canvases, her practice extends to experimental wood and wire sculpture and immersive video installation with painted, hanging fabrics. Working through a process-based approach, Crichton transforms abstract concepts - time, memory, identity, the collective subconscious - into charged visual experiences. Her canvases move through the tension of destruction and resolution: layers of mark-making and drawing-like structures build atmospheric, psychological landscapes, while inks stain and bleed into raw canvas, paint is scraped and scratched away, and biomorphic forms emerge and dissolve beneath contemplative washes. Akin to surrealist automatism, her practice taps into raw creativity through the subconscious, drawing from her own drawings and the urban environment as source material. The result — textured, layered surfaces reminiscent of city walls bearing the marks of time and human interaction — is both an ode to process and to the eternal now.

Frenetic forms and marks mirror the emotions that arise from living within contemporary societal systems and the digital world, and her canvases carry tenderness, tension and power in equal measure, a nod to the contradictions of modern life.
